OK, OK… So how do I use body language to be a more effective communicator? Body language can be used for a number of powerful applications in communication and this boil down to how you or the other party is representing congruence in their/your own communication. There are three broad areas of classification where body language can be used for more effective communication: [amprotect=2, 3] Manipulation of information delivery – We can either erase, buffer or amplify the impact of information delivery, depending on how congruent our body language is with the message being delivered at the time of delivery. Incongruence literally means “not harmonious” per Webster’s dictionary (from incongruous). For our purposes this refers to the system of communication and the term system comprises many things… Language, content, abstraction level, tonality, etc… and last but certainly NOT least is body language. Let’s talk a bit further about how and where incongruity happens and how we vet this out… Incongruence/congruence in body language communication happens in five major categories: [amprotect=2, 3] Contextual – The surroundings including both physical and social/cultural. There is quite a bit of controversy wrapped around body language… Lie detection, mind reading, fortune telling… you name it; I have heard or read it. But what can we believe? Today we are going to talk about Shalom Schwartz ‘s The Theory of Basic Human Values. Shalom Schwartz is a Social Psychologist and cross-cultural researcher in the fields of inter-group conflict and basic human values. What the theory states is that there are 10 basic human values that are displayed in all societies and that these values interact with each other to form a circular structure based on the inherent conflict or compatibility of the underlying motivations that we discussed in our earlier post. The picture to the right illustrates the structure we are talking about… The reason that they [...]

In the recent past values were considered one of the key ingredients to a successful attempt at persuasion. If you knew and understood what someone’s values were, you could simply package your communication around them and presto… you had their button pushed. It would be great if that were so, but unfortunately (or maybe fortunately depending on how you look at it) the human brain is not so simple. The reality of the matter is that it takes quite a bit more to successfully persuade someone. That being said, values are an important, powerful and integral part to being able [...]
