Communication Strategy

Yesterday I introduced the 5 questions necessary to direct your mind through the effective usage of body language in any communication effort. I think it is important to repeat the fact that you should be looking to use these questions to TRAIN YOUR MIND through repetition. The length of time necessary for a skill to become automatic is person-dependent so to say how long it will take you to learn this is futile. It depends on how quickly your mind is able to create strong enough bonds to create a neural net. For the middle of the bell curve, if [...]

OK, OK… So how do I use body language to be a more effective communicator? Body language can be used for a number of powerful applications in communication and this boil down to how you or the other party is representing congruence in their/your own communication. There are three broad areas of classification where body language can be used for more effective communication: [amprotect=2, 3] Manipulation of information delivery – We can either erase, buffer or amplify the impact of information delivery, depending on how congruent our body language is with the message being delivered at the time of delivery. Incongruence literally means “not harmonious” per Webster’s dictionary (from incongruous). For our purposes this refers to the system of communication and the term system comprises many things… Language, content, abstraction level, tonality, etc… and last but certainly NOT least is body language. Let’s talk a bit further about how and where incongruity happens and how we vet this out… Incongruence/congruence in body language communication happens in five major categories: [amprotect=2, 3] Contextual – The surroundings including both physical and social/cultural. There is quite a bit of controversy wrapped around body language… Lie detection, mind reading, fortune telling… you name it; I have heard or read it. But what can we believe? Where do myth and fact part ways to help you learn a skill that is indeed viable for providing accurate information? Let’s chat a bit more about what body language really does tell you and why it is so darn telling… To be accurate, body language will not and can not tell you the “truth” per se. It can tell you that there is incongruity between someone’s language and [...]

Body language is a fairly broad and complex topic. It is a fascinating subject and the most alluring aspect seems to be the concept of detecting deception. The term deception has a very negative connotation from a linguistic standpoint. When we think of deception we think of lying, cheating and black alley dealings with no other intent but to injure the other party in one way shape or form. Deception though is simply a misrepresentation. Although it can hurt someone, it can also prevent them from being hurt. Take the following example… Your wife asks you if you think it [...]

In my previous post we discussed the vertical activation and redistribution of images through the upper, middle and lower fields of vision. The other and more important component for the purpose of accurate “lie detection” is the horizontal activation. Rather than some long rehash, let’s just get right into it… [amprotect=2, 3] As you probably already know, we have a left and right hemisphere in our brain and each side has different attributes that allow each to perform different functions. Our Left Visual Field (LVF) is wired directly into the right visual cortex residing in the right hemisphere. Right Visual [...]
